The biggest issue in electing Senators is control of who gets appointed as a federal judge.  It is true there are good judges who when it comes to the bench are neither Republican nor Democrat.  But for Chief Justice Roberts to claim there are not Republican or Democratic judges just flies in the face of reality.

""We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges," Roberts said in a statement responding to comments Trump made earlier in the week criticizing the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. "What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for."

Trumps attacks may be wrong, but Chief Justice Roberts demeaned the entire judiciary with his response.  Now we have two loud mouths talking nonsense.

Everyone who does  civil rights work finds any basis to file in California so the 9th Circuit will do the appellate review.  There is a reason why so many immigration cases were filed in Texas.  The Republicans were counting on the 5th Circuit Republican judges to side with them.

We cannot fix the problem until we are willing to tell the truth about the problem.

I think you lack insight into the comments made by Roberts. Or, since you are infallible, maybe I do.

Thanks for a question which extends the discussion. On a theoritical level he is right. But in terms of realty his comment is misleading. I understand he is trying to protect the integrity of the judciary. I wish we could go back to the Independent commission Jimmy Carter had for selecting federal judicial candidates. We both know since Reagan, but Bush for sure the selection process has become very idiological.

I am glad he spoke up for the judiciary. If you remember I said in another poat watch how he now becomes the swing vote. He gets the importance of an independent judiciary. But he knows it is not real. What I want to see is a strong opinion from Chief Justice Roberts spelling it out for the lower court judges, there are no Obama, Trump etc judges and he expects them to act accordingly.

Part of the problem is they are only deciding about half of the cases they use to. Appellate courts ignore supreme court authority sometimes within a week of an opinion because they know out of some 8000 appeals only about 80 will be heard.

I agree with what Chief Justice Roberts is trying to do, but he can only do it through strong opinions. To do this he needs to lead the court to getting back to at least 120 cases a year, and eventually to 150. But suggesting there are no idiological judges on both sides is dishonest. But we saw how Trumps appointment ruled against him in CNN. And I completented the judge for taking an approach which was developing the case for the Supreme Court. So I would say that judge is many things [good] but not a Trump Judge. But there are both Republican and Democratic judges Justice Roberts seems to care. But we need honest action not misleading words. For the record I like Justice Roberts and thing his teenage kids are going to be good for him.

You can really help extend the discussion if you might give us your insight. A lot of this is perception, and your perception may help really extend the discussion in a very helpful way.
