A MOTHER IS NOT A DOMESTIC ENGINEER OR YOUR FRIEND - SHE IS YOUR PROTECTOR AND GUIDE

Picture it, 1974, my mother's 55th birthday. We are in Nicaragua for Semana Santa - more like 3 weeks that year.  A knock at the door - it is a man come to take my mother to dinner.  My grandmother asks if any of her sons were there to escort my mother.  My mother looked at my grandmother in disbelief and said no.  My grandmother said then you are not going out.   My mother left for dinner.

Yes, my mother was 55, but her mother still saw herself as the protector - even if it was for nothing more than my mother's reputation.

Mothers are the last to sit at the table, after all are served.

Mothers point their finger to their eye when you ask "where is my jacket?" - translation - go look for it and learn to be responsible.

Mothers absorbed all of the worries and problems of their children and spouse.

I hate when we take such a beautiful word such  as mother and change it to Domestic Engineer - so impersonal - so neutral without depth or meaning.

A mother is your directional guide to life who knows when to let her bird fly and fail if you must.

I chose this picture because my mom, grandmother and aunt each played a role in my life as a mother.  When I was born mom was very sick so my grandmother came from Nicaragua to help.  After mom died  for nearly 30 years Angelita played the role of mom to the 7 of us.  So while I have my mom, each of these women played a role as mom in my life at some time or another.
