Native son of Crystal City, Texas, Jose Angel Gutierrez, former professor at UT Arlington and local Brownsville resident and attorney, is being honored once again. This time by his Alma Mater for his Bachelor’s Degree awarded in May 1966 in Kingsville, Texas. Texas A & M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) has selected him as their recipient for the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Gutierrez will be the honored guest at a downtown parade in Kingsville, Texas on Thursday October 13th and a formal celebration in the Student Center on Friday evening. He will also be presented during the half-time ceremonies along with the Homecoming Queen and court at the Saturday football game, October 15th.

Dr. Gutierrez will be joined in these festivities by his wife, Natalia and daughter Isabella Verjat, plus daughters Tozi and Andrea Gutierrez of Austin, Texas; and Filiberto and Iliana Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Upon notice of his selection Dr. Gutierrez remarked, “Kingsville A & I, as it was known then, was the only four-year college we could afford to attend in the 1960s.”  At this institution, he said, “I grew into a motivated young man because of the excellent mentors I found at A & I, and kept them as close friends to this day.”

“Kingsville and the university still holds a special place in my heart and memory. I met my former wife Luz then; went on to law school and graduate school given the thirst for knowledge instilled in me; and, initiated my commitment to social justice during those years.”

“I thank those that nominated me; the TAMUK Alumni Association voters for selecting me; and, my family’s support over the years.”
