IT WILL BE KIKO RENDON V. RUBEN HERRERA

If Ruben Herrera keeps this election only about Kiko he will have a better chance at winning.  But if he is by implication tied to the attacks on Lily Tercero the women will vote against him.  My sources are telling me TSC either on Monday or Tuesday will receive notice of formal accreditation.  This will mean Lily Tercero has brought accreditation, higher enrollment, lower tuition [still needs to go lower] and a stable bond rating.  For Ruben to win the election has to about him and Kiko.

Ruben's Achilles heal appears to be Adela Garza.  Every source ties him to Adela and her daughter.  This does not mean he will be Adela's lapdog.  Everyone is saying nice things about his person.  The key is how he runs the election.

There are issues.  Like many divorces the separation between TSC and UTB made for enemies.  Many who remained behind wanted to keep the failed system in place.  Kiko Rendon gets an "F" for his efforts in aiding Lily Tercero, navigate these difficult waters.  I do not care who became the first TSC president after the separation - discord was going to follow.  The issue is how it was managed.

Separate from all of that, and this goes to the entire Board including and in particular to Adela Garza.  She is the one complaining endlessly, but in her complaints you never ever hear her speak to the issue TSC gets an "F" when it comes to job training for manufacturing.  People keep on asking why Brownsville cannot attract manufacturers.  It's simple - we have no trained workers and no program or plan to train them in the future.  The number one failure of TSC is not even on the tongue of Adela Garza, or for that matter any of the Board members.

The lack of job training for workers in manufacturing is a valid issue and the type discussion this election should entail.  We shall see.  Of course if Ruben makes this an issue he will have no choice but to ask it of the entire Board, which includes Adela.  She is safe until 2020, so people will forget it before then.

There are legitimate issues in this election.  But if Ruben Herrera goes the path of openly aligning with Adela Garza and attacking Lily Tercero, he will lose.  My sources are telling me they would be shocked if he were to attack Lily Tercero.  So the question is, does he allow himself to be tied to Adela and all or her baggage, or simply run a campaign on legitimate issues, for which there are many.

ADDENDUM:

Well an insider wants a bigger story here on the training of a workforce.  Now in the past I have called out Lily Tercero for her position of no new programs until after accreditation.  My view was and remains you can still be seeking grant money to start the new programs once accreditation is received.  On this issue I have been clear.  Lily Tercero does not understand this function of a community college.  But it remains, the Board should have taken her to task for her position.

From a TSC insider we were seeking an  "innovative workforce training center," where we were requesting dedicated funding from the Leg.  But Rene Oliveira ....  us by doing nothing, despite promises that he would "take the lead" on it and get us funding."

Even United Brownsville Supported the Initiative: "

"Strongly support a separate allocation of $6M in supplemental line item funding
for TSC’s Innovative Workforce Training Center, over and above formula
funding, for program equipment and existing infrastructure renovation."

The "plan was to obtain funding to build out part of ITEC and get money for equipment for workforce training."

The insider properly notes that under Juliet Garcia job training was reduced to funnel money to UTB.  During the partnership and even now I have said students should not attend TSC or UTB for medical training.  In many cases, except nursing they can get the same training in the Air Force for free while getting paid.  After 4 years they have experience and a free ride at any Texas Community College or University to go onto nursing or medical school.

The medical training program at TSC remains the same joke it was under Juliet Garcia.  They are recruiting numbers for financial aid knowing full well the majority will never be admitting into any of the programs after completing their prerequisites.  In this context, Lily Tercero is nothing more than Juliet Garcia 2.0.  But again the Board should have been stronger in directing her.  They were not. This falls on Kiko Rendon.  If the minority did not have the votes, then they should have been more vocal.  Instead what we got from Adela Garza were bogus claims which hurt TSC.

The source is saying far too much money is being directed to the nursing program.  This is elitist.  The average Joe needs job training in manufacturing.  This is where our economy will grow, once we have the workers.  I hear those who blame Lily Tercero for this, but they need to come out publicly and state their position.  I get jobs are on the line if the insiders go to the press and tell the truth.  But you know what, that is what you do.

I have said this before and in this piece, Kiko Rendon has failed as the Board President.  We should not have this level of discord.  Job training for the average Joe should not have been ignored.  This is all on Kiko - he as the leader has failed to lead.

Ruben has a campaign if he focuses on Kiko - but if it gets reduced to Lily Tercero's micromanaging and nursing or robotics, it will be lost on the people.  The campaign has to be about leadership.  It has to be about job training for the average Joe.  It cannot be about too much money going to favorite projects because then you divide people. Everyone will get we need more job training without having to say too much funding going this program or another.

Ruben Herrera is smart, hard-working, and no-nonsense. Finally someone to bring some common sense to the Board!

Ruben is a respected colleague and a fine man. He will be a breath of fresh air, a sharp mind, the voice of good judgment, and free of the typical political baggage. Now, why in the world would he jump into that circus?

Maybe he will force a new majority without Adela which brings reason.

While Rendon has been chairman tuition has dropped, enrollment has risen, taxes haven't raised & the school got accredited. The proof is in the pudding. He has my vote

It is the work of the whole board, not Rendon's alone

Kiko is the leader - but I said in my post Ruben will have to address his complaints to the entire Board including Adela Garza. What part of that did you not understand?
