THE MENTAL ILLNESS FACTOR IN DOMESTIC ABUSE AND HOW THE BROWNSVILLE POLICE AND THE COUNTY JAIL FAIL THE VICTIMS

Parents Against Domestic Abuse profiles video on Domestic Abuse among Mentally Ill People

Today I will spend the day trying to help a family with a schizophrenic son who has become very violent.  He is an adult so their options are limited.  They will not call the police to deal with the violence because of the BPD policy of kill first ask questions later.

He will threaten the police, but not harm them.  But the family is convinced the second he threatens to kill the police they will shoot and ask questions later.  Our county jail is not staffed for the mentally ill.  The blame for this goes 100% on the County Commissioners.  They refuse to fund the jail with a proper medical staff and mental health unit.

Years ago I did a grand jury referral on a mentally ill man who killed his mentally ill wife.  The DA thinking they were just two poor no bodies told the grand jury his confession to the police, and neighbor were insufficient for an indictment.  What the DA did not know was the victim's father was a millionaire.  The DA was thrown from office and the husband was committed to a state institution.
It is time we get educated and help these people.

fyi. the County jail has Tropical Texas to go in and help inmates. there is also a Dr. that goes to examine and treat them.

Tropical is overwhelmed - they cannot keep up with the clientele - also a lot of the doctors are via television - you cannot treat that way - many patients just walk away - they are way under funded - the state does not care
