SUPREME COURT FINDS PERSONAL SLOGANS ON LICENSE PLATES TO BE GOVERNMENT SPEECH AND THEREBY UPHOLDING THE RIGHT OF TEXAS TO DENY INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS THE RIGHT TO CERTAIN SLOGANS

As this moment there are 6 Supreme Court decisions today. Some are criminal cases some are speech cases.   Click to scan

The one my readers may be interested in is the Sons of Confederate Veterans.  The Supreme Court found Texas could reject their slogan for a Texas license plate because the speech is government speech and not the speech of the organization.  So you will not be seeing the above license plate in Texas. It may shock people, but if used in an historical context and not a racial context, I think the states over regulate the use of the Confederate Flag.  It is an important part of U.S. history.  The war between the states was not only a war about slavery.  The soldiers who fought believed they were fighting for the very freedoms our Founding Fathers sought to protect.  To say their service is less valuable to our history because the south lost the war, insults veterans.  We were fighting our brothers who believed they were fighting to defend the freedoms we won during the revolution.

As I type the same issue is alive and well today.  Some states are openly challenging the federal government and threatening to not follow the Supreme Court ruling on Marriage Equality.  This is real history and an ongoing part of who we are.

While I agree the Confederate flag offends many, it nonetheless represents an important part of our history.  History lost today before the Supreme Court.  When you fear speech you fear true freedom.
