CONGRESSMAN VELA CHOOSES WWII VETERAN DANIEL MONTES TO LEAD PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AT EVENT ON AUGUST 22, 2015

Daniel Montes is mostly known for his artistic work as a mason.  If the city or university need restoration work done on an older building Mr. Montes is who they call.  Private citizens who need restoration work on some of the older buildings have hired him to do the work.

At 94, in the last two years he now only consults, whereas before he was still mixing the mortar, and placing the brick.  A lot of his work is featured at Isle Grande on South Padre.  He is the only one around who still remembers how to burn the lime to make the mortar.  His skill is in matching mortar which may be over 100 years old.  He did a lot of the brick and in particular the oven restoration in the Cueto building.

This guy still goes out dancing with his friends.  At worse his activity level is that of a 60 year old.  He use to hunt with Judges Garza and Vela.  He knows them all.

Mr. Montes served in the Pacific theater during WWII, while in the Navy.  He was married to my sister Caroline until her passing in 2002.

The event will be in the Harlingen municipal event center.  It will feature help for veterans along with representatives from numerous federal agencies to help with problems, jobs, education - etc.  I will have more once the formal notice of time and agencies is posted.

My deepest respect and admiration for Mr. Montes who, besides having the strong work ethic that made America great, answered the call to defend his country. I respect 'maistros' with skills who take pride in doing a job well, something that is sorely missing nowadays when much of the time you see naked greed all around you, morally corrupt officials trying to make a quick buck at the expense of our community. Our community would be so much better off with more citizens like Mr. Montes, but they don't make them like that anymore.
