MICHAEL GONZALEZ SPEAKS TO IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING THE CITY CHARTER

UPDATE AND INVITE:

The BV will not copy and paste comments attributed to candidates posted on other blogs.  But Michael Gonzalez has purportedly made a compelling comment for change, while conversely Rick Longoria has made a compelling argument for why his experience makes him the best choice.

The community would be well served if both sent the BV their comments - so they can be posted side by side.  Rick as the incumbent will have his comment posted first and then underneath will be Mike Gonzalez.  I think it puts the issue into better perspective that way.

Then I would hope each side would give a professional counter.  I am certain both Rick and Mike can show how professional campaigns can be run.  Sometimes the truth hurts - both sides can make valid arguments that the other may not like, but it can be done in a professional manner.

Come on guys, show Brownsville how professionals run campaigns on merit and ideas and then allow the people to decide.  I am just being honest - both sides are making compelling arguments.  I love it because this is how it should be done.  I do not live in the district so I do not get to vote for either.  I just want my readers to know both sides are making compelling arguments.  I would love nothing more than for both of these professionals to counter each other in a professional manner so that the voters can make a better informed decision.  If the candidates agree to this, I will of course not allow for derogatory comments - only substantive comments which go to the arguments and counter arguments.

Original Post

His press release and complaint to the city, addresses the issue of Rick Longoria and Roman Perez allegedly not accepting their nomination as candidates.  I know enough about the courts to know that when the judges do not like a result the meaning of the word "shall" becomes discretionary.

In reviewing Michael Gonzalez's complaint my concern is actually bigger - should commissioners and candidates know the city charter?  The answer is a clear yes.  A great deal of Tony Martinez's illegal or improper conduct occurred because of a city commission in the dark about the city charter and Executive Sessions.

This is a legitimate issue which needs to be addressed.  But it an issue.  Every election is more complex than one issue.

I invite Rick Longoria to respond any way he chooses.  Rick has personally told me he and Michael intend to run a clean campaign against one another.  This is good.  The two can use the BV to show how professionals run honest campaigns.  It is then up to the voters.

Rick already knows such as every other candidate, I publish all announcements and all policy papers.  For these posts such as this one - it is safe haven for the candidate.  I will not accept negative comments against either side.  The reason is I want to encourage the candidates to speak honestly on these issues.

You will note it is written for the people and elected officials.  My biggest problem with all elected officials is they do not know the rules.  I am particularly upset with their lack of knowledge concerning Executive Session.  There is no gag rule on what is said in Executive Session.  If our elected officials just knew the rules in the city charter and AG Manuel we would have better government.

Mr Gonzalez I'm not trying to up stage your opinion but really you think that the commish doesn't really no the rules? you got a lawyer, teacher (12 yrs),doctor(5yrs)etc i'm sure they no the rules but they ride their bikes around them .what about city attorney Sossi?they play dumb when it's convenient people want change I just hope people go vote this time good luck.ps. hit the road hard

It's me questioning knowledge of the rules - Mr. Gonzalez is just asking for enforcement.

It is interesting because Mark Sossi is in fear for his job and I can see him under Tony's command striking Rick Longoria

But I will tell you Michael Gonzalez is on record as being against the sale of Lincoln Park - so all Tony would accomplish is retaliation which could cost him the election as the people anger over his move

But Mark Sossi is dirty - so what he does is anyone's guess.

But what if the city has already approved & ordered the paper ballots for the election?

great question and thank you for asking it.

I do not remember the exact time frame but just before the commencement of early voting the city can remove the name of the candidate - if the ballots have been printed the voted will not count.

I am not speaking to the plain language of the law - but with rare exception the courts tend to disfavor denying someone ballot access.
