DISTRICT ATTORNEY LUIS SAENZ PUBLIC COMMENTS ON LINCOLN PARK
"Honorable Mayor Pro-Tem, Honorable Commissioners and U.T. Representatives:

Welcome to Cameron County, the 11th largest county in Texas and one of the poorest.

I will address my remarks to the U.T. representatives.

Although some of you may know me as Cameron County District Attorney, I stand before you as a private citizen of Brownsville, who since 1978 has been timely paying my taxes.

I rise in strong opposition to the transfer of Lincoln Park to RGVUT.

As a citizen of Brownsville, I have been blessed.  I have had the honor and privilege to serve as President of the Brownsville Independent School District, Magistrate Judge for Cameron County and am presently serving as your District Attorney.  None the less, what I consider my greatest and proudest accomplishment is that in 1984, I walked across a stage as a graduate of The University of Texas Law School.

Why am I so proud of that?  Because I am proud of the honor, integrity and respect that U.T. stands for.   As Walter Cronkite says “What starts here, changes the world”.  U.T. represents the best that this nation has to offer.  Its high standards and noble traditions are second to none.  It is a true beacon of justice and fairness.

Please turn around and look at these people behind you.  These are the folks you are going to rape by taking their park.  This is not who U.T. is or stands for.  Take a step back and ask yourself “What would Barbara Jordan say about this taking”.  What are the headlines of the American Statesman and the Daily Texan going to read?  “U.T. takes city park from the poorest neighborhood in Brownsville and gives them an empty lot next to sewer plant.”

Brownsville has been a good friend of U.T.   The people of Brownsville have already contributed more than their fair share.  Through the partnership with TSC, U.T. has grown and prospered.  I would say that when U.T. came to Brownsville, before entering into the partnership, U.T. was driving a Ford Focus; at end of partnership, U.T. drove away in a Cadillac.  The people of Brownsville are still paying for the buildings and property you took.  You took the assets and left us with the liabilities.

As charter members of the P.U.F., U.T. has enough money to fill every bank in Brownsville.  Why is it that you must take our park.

You are much better than this; your standards are much higher than this.  You are the University of Texas.  Do the right thing.  Respect the wishes of the people of Brownsville.  Do not take Lincoln Park from us.

Thank you."

THE MIRACLE OF LINCOLN PARK "PARQUE  DEL MILAGRO"

I am amazed in how so many people are putting aside differences to come together on Lincoln Park - hence Parque Del Milagro.  For me the miracle in people of such diverse opinion coming together on this one issue could be the game changer Brownsville has been looking for, for so long.  We must keep it going people.

This is coming together with the help of so many people and groups.  The BV is grateful to those feeding it information in aid of this battle.  It is taking all of us to make this work.  No one person or organization can do it on their own.

You have no shame do you? You bash our DA since he has been in office, and now you praise him. You will bash him again tomorrow I'm sure.

How sad of a person you must be. You live in a world of vendettas. I do not. The goal is to save Lincoln Park. Yes, Saenz will gain a lot of [political capital out of this -0 but what do I care. His voice has value and as an elected official should be heard.

You seem to be saying that since we he and I have political differences I should not report his efforts to help on Lincoln Park

You seem to have missed the point of Parque Del Milagro

I am many things - but petty is not one of them. I put aside differences everyday for the greater good - that is how a healthy society moves forward.

Why not join the world of the healthy instead of obsessing with settling scores.
