PUTTING INTO PERSPECTIVE THE NEW UT CAMPUS AND TONY MARTINEZ'S MIND BOGGLING INCOMPETENCE

The LRGV will never amount to anything until we work together.  Years ago when Harlingen built its airport, Brownsville and Harlingen should have come together for a regional airport on 77 on the south side of San Benito.  But no, Brownsville is always a go it alone and get nothing kind of town.  Our history is one of self destruction and getting nothing.

The new university, medical school, community hospital (which means a joint taxing authority between Hidalgo and Cameron county), and VA hospital can only happen if McAllen, Edinburg, Harlingen, Brownsville, Hidalgo county and Cameron county work as a team.  This simple reality is completely lost on Tony Martinez and Juliet Garcia.

This offer of free land to UT undermines the very delicate negotiations between the many entities.  I am certain  our state representatives, especially those in McAllen and Hidalgo county are about now asking themselves, can Tony Martinez and Juliet Garcia be that stupid.

Brownsville needs to accept that it will be a satellite campus to the main campus in Edinburg.  This is the big prize for Hidalgo county, while Harlingen (Cameron county) will get the medical school, and the VA hospital.  The compromise on the community hospital will probably be on the Hidalgo/Cameron county border.  This is how compromise works.

If Brownsville had an intelligent person speaking for its people, it would be pushing for a small VA and community medical clinic in Brownsville as part of the compromise.   But no, Tony Martinez is trying to bribe UT in a way which could kill the entire deal.  Hopefully Dr. Cigarroa will send Tony Martinez a clear message he is not helping.

TSC is negotiating the sale of land to UT.  This is good,  The money can be used to pay down the bonds.  This will hopefully make tuition cheaper.  How does the city giving the land to UT for free help TSC to sell the land they have available as a means to pay down the bonds and lower tuition?

My long time readers know I have historically supported a new airport along 77 near University blvd.  One day a reader suggested it would be better placed in 511.  I agree.  If UT needs this land, then let them buy it conditioned on the City of Brownsville using the money to buy land on 511 for the new airport.

Moving forward and progress is possible.  The new BPUB natural gas electrical facility is a good start towards a better tomorrow.

What happens to Brownsville is now in the hands of Melissa Zamora, Jessica Tetreau, John Villarreal, and Rick Longoria.  It will take only one of these four to align with Tony Martinez to upset the delicate negotiations between the many entities involved.  One false move like Brownsville enticing UT with free land  could send McAllen and Hidalgo county looking for a separate deal which would mean nothing for either county.

What is the purpose of offering free land before UT has even made a decision as to its intent, other than to sent McAllen a message that Brownsville wants a fight?  How does such conduct help with a unified front by the many entities while dealing with UT?  This is nothing more than Juliet Garcia and Tony Martinez being greedy and putting their own selfish interests ahead of Brownsville and the entire LRGV.

Hidalgo County leaders are trying to come up with a match in order to move the medical school to their area. I hope this bill offers some kind of protection for Cameron County. We are already losing all of our administration jobs. Athletic jobs and associated hotel tax is probably next on the chopping block for Cameron County.

The medical school is going to Harlingen - they already have too many new buildings in Harlingen to just walk away

None of this can happen without a joint taxing authority which includes Cameron and Hidalgo county - everyone is going to get part of it

Why would Cameron County vote for higher property taxes if everything is going to go to McAllen - McAllen knows this Brownsville knows this

This is why all of these complaints that McAllen will get everything is all bogus lies - without Cameron county on board nothing happens - hence we get the medical school

There are only two buildings in Harlingen in a City that is losing its' population and a crumbling economy. Why would the UT system place a mamoth of a medical school there if it does not have the resource and finance base needed to be successful? A medical school not only needs to be financially supported but it has to have the patients to serve and residency/doctors in place to support it.

The VA clinic is already using a lot of residents at the clinic - there is tons of land next to the two existing brand new buildings - the VA is not going to move - it is centrally located for the population it serves

the land that the cardenas family is proposing to donate for a north campus has utility accessibility issues that will be extremely expensive to solve. that is why it is still vacant after all these years.

hidalgo county leaders say that the new med school would be best suited for hidalgo county due to the size of the metro area. the thing about hidalgo county is that they have lots of hospitals already. edinburg, mission, weslaco, 2 in mcallen. do you think that the number of beds per capita would go in to the figure? harlingen has a low population with 2 hospitals, and brownsville has a large population with 2 hospitals. if you combine the hrl/bro metro area, maybe it washes in terms of beds per capita.

The cardenes issue is a distraction to get teh people behind downtown - UT will stay downtown if TSC cooperates and it appears they will - this is all one big con job by Tony Martinez and his lemmings - sad the city commissioners fell for it

On the hospital bed issue - thanks for a great comment - I was at the VA today - the clinic administration already know that the VA is pushing hard that the medical school be in Harlingen - they already have the land and two very large faciities - Harlingen is centrally located which is key - McAllen can claim the world but the VA wants the medical school in Harlingen and Harlingen it will be

It is just too centrally located - Hidgalgo county will get the main campus for the unversity and Cameron will get the medical school - this is the only compromise which will work - without it the two counties will never vote for the new taxing authority needed to make it all happen
