A BATTLE  CRY TO STOP DONATION OF LAND TO UT

Melissa Zamora first posted to the BV as an anony, and then her comment through a reader was posted to Cheezmeh - I agree with everything she said except the impact the land donation will have on tuition.  She bought a big tale from Tony Martinez on that one.  If anything by donating land to UT, UT will have less incentive to buy land and buildings from TSC , which for sure in fact would have brought down tuition for TSC students - so if anything the tuition argument is the exact opposite of that argued by Melissa Zamora.  But beyond this, her argument is sound.

But she still missed the boat - yes the Titanic was the ship to be on, until it sailed and then pretty was not so pretty.

UT taking anything from Brownsville is the equivalent of a billionaire asking a homeless person for a dollar for a cup of Joe.  This is the essence of the problem.  There is no pretty way to paint around it.

SO HERE IS THE DEAL

Brownsville can certainly raise enough money to take out a full page add in a Sunday edition of the the Austin American Statesman with a simple message to Dr. Fancisco Cigarroa.

DR. CIGARROA HAVE YOU NO SHAME? - A BILLIONAIRE ORGANIZATION TAKING MONEY FROM THE POOREST OF THE POOR - HAVE YOU NO SHAME?

Then list key facts:

Brownsville is 95% Latino, would a wealthy Anglo community get the same disrespect?

State how much money UT already owes TSC but refuses to pay

State Brownsville's poverty level

Put a picture of all the potholes on Iowa - Caption - Brownsville has no money for potholes, but Dr. Cigarroa wants nearly 77 free acres from the people of Brownsville.

A picture of an ambulance - Caption - Brownsville cannot afford to buy enough ambulances to service its community, but Dr. Cigarroa wants nearly 77 free acres from the people of Brownsville.

WE THE PEOPLE OF BROWNSVILLE ASK YOU DR. CIGARROA - HAVE YOU NO SHAME?

STOP WELFARE FROM THE POOREST OF THE POOR TO DR. CIGARROA'S BILLION DOLLAR UT SYSTEM

An ad along these lines in a Sunday edition of the Austin American Statesman will go viral worldwide.  UT will be humiliated and Brownsville will become known internationally as a victim of Dr. Cigarroa.

I put $25 on the table - will Brownsville donate enough for the ad?  Will a trustworthy person take the lead and organize this?  I doubt it - so let's stop whining - time to move on to the next scam against the poorest of the poor to keep billionaires billionaires, and the poor serving beer to Tony's compadres in the downtown bars.

I will put $50 and I am of meager means, but that would be worth it, how much do you need?

You are dead wrong on this issue. The City has lots to gain by donating property to UT. Do you know how many communities in the country would do anything to have a university campus in their community? The fact is that this donation to have university in downtown will not only ensure UT commits to us long term in educating our youth but it will help revitalize our downtown. It is hard for anyone to comprehend this because this decision is not one that will show results tomorrow, next year but in future generations to come as our community gets better educated which will raise the standard of living in one of the poorest areas of the country.

I will check tomorrow - I am certain it is more than a $1000 - maybe as much as $3000 - so maybe a half page ad would be better - they are not like the Herald - the Washington post for example gets as much as $80,000 for a full page ad - but I am certain the American Statesman is a lot cheaper

To deadwrong - your argument is sound - but you fail to understand the dynamics of what is happening - if UT does not give us a quality satelite campus to the main campus then Cameron county will vote no on the community hospital taxing authority and then there will be nothing

UT will not choose nothing - without the donation so long as TSC does the right thing the new campus will be intermingled with TSC and UT will buy land and buildings from TSC and Brownsville - without donations.

Cameron county holds the cards - if we do not get the medical school and a quality satelite campus Cameron county will vote no on the new taxing authority

My issue is not the known benefits - I agree you are 100% correct - but we will get it without donating a thing - on that issue you are dead wrong - without Cameron County agreeing to the new taxing authority there will be nothing - UT has no choice but to give us a new campus ajoined to TSC or they get nothing from us as to the new taxing authority.

If we humiliate UT we will get everything we want within reason without it costing us a dime - in fact the city will be paid for the land and TSC will be paid for land and buildings

Like I said - Brownsville will whine but never deliver - any number of business people can pay for the ad and not miss the money -
This will never happen - so lets move on to the next scam so we can whine and do nothing.

The issue here is so simple - the history of mistreatment by UT - they did not pay their rent - and now they want what little money we have when we cannot even pay our bills

Brownsville is what it is because Brownsville is its people
