SAVE BOCA CHICA BEACH BLOGSPOT

http://savebocachicabeach.blogspot.com/

Here is the deal.  As is almost always the case with our elected officials and a handful of community activists you show them a few shiny objects and they will buy anything you have to offer.  There are thousands of good reasons  for getting behind SpaceX.  But even a billion good reasons does not abrogate the obligation of our elected officials and press to ask the hard hitting questions.

I will remind Judge Cascos and Mayor Martinez, and for that matter every member of commissioners court and the city commission - when Judge Gilberto Hinojosa tried to justify selling our public beach on SPI he became one of the most hated elected officials in Cameron county.

I am inviting anyone who wants to add to this discussion to submit their posts. I cannot and will not do this on my own.  There are thousands of more qualified people than me to make the argument for Boca Chica.  Please send pictures and informational type data.

I did send one simple question to the media person for SpaceX and they responded with - "we do not know."  All I asked is, what if any airport runway requirements does your company have for such a project.

Here is the email for SpaceX's media person. Kirstin Brost Grantham <Kirstin@spacex.com>;

Please only send professional questions.

Some of my concerns are:

How will the project impact access to Boca Chica?  If no impact will the county agree to close Boca Chica on launch days so that thousands of people are not allowed to converge on the beach and destroy it.

Who will be responsible for building an observation area?  Who will be responsible for the cost of upgrading hwy 4?

Security.  I realize it is highly unlikely that there will be a surface to air missile attack - but security against such an attack is a reality.  We have no control over the wilderness area on the Mexican side.  Shoulder based rocket launchers are readily available for purchase by any terrorist group.  Who will be responsible for all of the security?

Then there are a 1000 good questions about the environmental impact SpaceX will have on the area.  The area where they want to build the launch pad is filled with wild life - including new wild life returning to Texas from Mexico for the first time in over 100 years.  I love to camp on Boca Chica - you would be amazed how much wild life comes out at night.

It is clear our elected officials and a handful of community activists who see this as just an opportunity for economic development will never ask the questions related to Boca Chica and the surrounding area.

So let's see if the area has enough concerned citizens to keep this blog going.

Even if it is just daily pictures highlighting Boca Chica - it is a start.

If you want to submit a post with a picture send it to bobbywc58@yahoo.com, or just submit a comment - but pictures in this case will be very, very helpful

I frequent this beach a lot, and it pisses me off that Brownsvillites just cannot resist trashing their own beach even though they have trash cans all over the place. The other day I saw a guy dumping all of his beer cans (with his kids in the car) on the side of the road, making sure the nopales hid his treasure. Yet not a half mile behind him, he passed a trash can. Its no wonder the people from the ISLAND want to charge for street parking when you have the people who should most treasure the beaches (valley residents), dumping their dirty pampers all over the place. Maybe, the precinct one commissioner should start charging an entrance fee to Boca Chica, much like they do at the Island's beach access.

The county needs to putr large dumpsters near the entrance. I have seen weekends where all the trash cans are full so people just dump their trash anywhere. We need big signs with big fees for anyone who dumbs their garbage.

If kept Boca Chica is the most amazing beach - but I fear these people who are easily impressed with shiny objects will allow it to be destroyed or taken away from us

Thanks for commenting - if you have nice pictures or just want to tell a story about a nice day on the beach - send it and I will post it as a separate post

My late dad always brought us to Boca Chica Beach for entertainment and fishing. Our family loves fishing at Boca Chica. From the 1960 thru now, we love Boca Chica Beach for BBQ and fishing. The Powers Family.

the permit is for 12 launches per year. the highway and at least a portion of the beach will have to be closed for about 4 hours before each launch (according to spacex reps). in my opinion, 4 hours a month of closure is worth the economic impact that this company will bring to the area. a private launch site near the beach is 1 million miles from judge gilbert trying to lease a public park to a private enterprise thereby depriving the citizens of their beach. this is a totally different situation. there is a good possibility that utilities will be extended out to the beach as a result of this project. utilities could lead to the establishment of a park ranger station or some public restrooms with proper dumpsters. there are simply too many positives to this project to let it go.

The idea of closing the beach just before the launch is something I support. I do not want thousands of people using the beach as an observatory. On this issue of closing the beach the day of launch is something I would not only approve, but I would demand it as a way to protect the beach.

On the cascos/Hinojosa issue - you do not understand the nature of people and politics - there may be a big difference such as you say - but people do not get these subtlies - they hear they cannot go to the beach and they will react.

These are issues which real leaders get on top of before they become a problem. Judge Cascos (this is a county beach) should have been the main information source on Boca Chica from square one - any disinformation which is out there is 100% on his failure to inform the people. Once the people believe the disinformation there is no going backwards. this is why taking the lead on this issue is so important.

It was mentioned that this might not happen due to the projectory of the rockets going over parts of Florida. The sky is falling issue will probably kill this venture. Space X is using Brownsville for leverage and all we have is gullible politicians as always.

wow...real information put out there on SpaceX. I do not think our elected officials understand the whole project nor are apt to ask "hard hitting" questions so that our community understands well what is to come and to have a voice! I hope we don't get cheated because our officials just care about their pocket$$$$.

Also, what is the deal with some Facebook Pages that I have been seeing out there supporting SpaceX. Who are the folks throwing putting their name out there with Space X? Is Brownsville Living a rep for Space X?

SpaceX would not pay money to anyone to promote this project - the problem is a lot of very short cited people who react to shiny things and ask questions only when it is too late.

yup, yup.....i agree bobby. a lot of short cited people jumped on this for their own self-promotion!

Yes, I agree. A few people will be benefit from this project, but not the community.

Never complain about UTB grads not having jobs if you chase this company away. Unlike Carlos Quintanilla the SpaceX people will leave us. They have other options.
