BISD OVERCROWDING WILL LEAD TO STUDENT FAILURE

Hanna is a closed campus because of overcrowding. This is not new. Going back a good 10 years BISD knew the future of Hanna. Both current and past school boards get an F on this issue. But the current three idiots, Presas-Garcia, Longoria, and Saavedra may go down in BISD history has the three most misinformed school board members in the history of BISD.

They have voted at every chance to block construction and to not even pay bills for services already rendered. They have made it their personal agenda to attack the current construction to relieve overcrowding.

It is sad when school board members are so misinformed that they would rather have the children fail in overcrowded schools than lead and simply say what needs to be said - we need more schools.

Years ago, past school boards should have planned a 9th and 10th grade highschool to relieve overcrowding at Hanna. They did not - so now the children will suffer. How sad.

What if someone who knew what they were doing would sit down and rezone all the high schools and move students around to balance the enrollment? Also, the medical magnet school at Hanna attracts a lot of students, so maybe the magnet schools should be doubled up in various campuses or get rid of the magnet school totally. The interschool transfers also need to be scrutinized closer and for valid reasons!

Mr Bobby,

"How sad".

It seems as if whenever there's talk about "BISD" people either roll their eyes at all the lunacy of the board or get mad because of all the negativity they read.

Yet come election time, all the slogans say "For the CHILDREN". THAT is sad because as we have seen lately (and from this article), it really never is.

Til next time...

There are many reasons that Hanna High School is overcrowded, first and foremost is that many students like Hanna and believe that it is the best High School in Brownsville and find some way to get enrolled there. This is in spite of being the oldest, most spread out, strangest architectural design of any school that I can think of.

Yes Brownsville needs smaller less crowded schools, but BISD has spent so much on the new Veterans Memorial High School there is not much left in the kitty.

Hanna High School is a “Recognized High School” if that makes any difference.

There is much to be learned at Hanna High School and the teachers, administrators as well as the cafeteria staff and custodians will be there for any student that desires a good education, the opportunity to have one.

Students at Hanna High School will never fail to get a good education because of being overcrowded, or in a substandard campus, the good teachers and administrators at Hanna High School would never let that happen, they make it work.

Like I have said, there is much to be learned at Hanna High School.

I have been to Hanna with parents wherein counselors looked them in the face and told them all is well with their kids only for the parent to learn their kid had not been to class in 3 months - the teachers, counselor and administratrs failed the child and the parent - you have a very odd sense of excellence and competence - this is a consequence of overcrowding

"this is a consequence of overcrowding"

I am sorry, this is a consequence of lazy individuals not doing their jobs. Teachers, counselors and administrators have responsibilies to each student whether you have 1,500 or 3,000 students in your campus.

The problem remains, for some strange reason, the idea that Hanna is the best high school in the district period. You are correct that new schools have been constructed, but the zoning laws are being circumvented. With Veterans in its second year, Hanna should have seen a significant drop in enrollment. But the Board allows exceptions to the zoning laws, allow more students to enroll in their magnet school, allow more students to entroll in their music programs. If the Board will not strictly adhere to their own zoning laws, you will never see a drop in enrollment for the school.

Regarding the parent who did not know his child had missed class for three months: there are robot calls for absences; the absences are reported on the report cards and progress reports (sent home every three weeks); and all the absences can be found online. I don't know what excuse any parent has for not keeping up with a child's progress.

My mother was called in because my sister had been absent for 2 weeks to her afternoon classes. Mother checked her folder with all her excuses and found that in one semester, my mother was suppose to have written 7 excuses for my sister -"Please excuse my daughter for being absent but her grandfather died." Does anyone bother to check or go over the excuses the students bring in with forged signatures? That may be because of the overcrowding and the numbers involved. Sure, a high school is rated by TEA and thus the ranking as #1. So, the students who score well are not recognized if the whole school does not do well, so many want to move to Hanna. You will find excellent students at all high schools and excellent teachers at all high schools, inspite of the administrative team. It is all up to the student to put in and get out as much as he is capable of doing. We need teachers like the ones we used to have, and we need more students like we were when we went to school to study and not to socialize. Oops, off my soap box!

Come on Brownsville stop complaining that students should not be allowed at Hanna because of overcrowding. Parents are responsible for their children and should be aware of there presence or lack of presence at their school.

I live near Hanna and I see cars
taking/picking up students. At least every 8th car has a Mexican
license plate and is full of students. Parents from Mexico obviously take turns crossing the
bridge to bring students to Hanna.

While I agree this is an unresolved problem in Brownsville because of an incompetent school Board - many Mexican nationals are now renting or have in fact bought homes on our side of the border so their children would be entitled to attend BISD

Bobby when are you going to stop calling the school board "incompetent". Parents are ultimately responsible for their children and their education. Apparently when people fail at parenting you Blame everyone around them but THEM!!! Get a grip and blame the appropriate party...The Parents!

Not that reality matters to someone who just loves to speak without regard for teh facts - but I speak to the issue of the parents all of the time and in fact have made clear it begins with the parents.

I realize in your little delutional world you believe the parents can control the issue of overcrowding but they cannot - overcrowding is caused by mismanagement by the school board - we know for a fact overcrowding makes it more difficult for the children to learm
