QUESTIONS FROM A READER AND A SAY NOTHING CAMPAIGN

A reader has sent me some questions they would like answered by the candidates.  The problem is candidates do not answer questions.  They will never put anything in writing other than generalized statements.  While I am glad there are so many new faces in the election, I find the campaigns to be empty.

A CHALLENGE TO MY READERS

Go to John Villarreals facebook page and demand he put in writing an answer to my reader's questions and his position on Fly Frontera.

I sent this post to John asking that he answer my reader's questions in addition to the following:

Do you support the use of taxpayer money to build a multilevel garage downtown to help with development of downtown?

People are very concerned the Fly Frontera deal will be put back on the table after the election,  what is your position on this issue?

>>>>>>>>
>

None of the candidates have demonstrated an understanding of Brownsville's economy and how you build jobs based on that economy.  Other than tax abatements and the BPUB reducing the fees for new businesses there is nothing the City Commission can do to created jobs.

Every candidate says they favor development of downtown.  This is all BS - until the city builds a multilevel parking garage downtown no one is going to develop the entertainment district.  No candidate has called for such a garage.

Then there is the issue of bringing in new business to Brownsville.  None of the candidates have demonstrated an understanding of the national economy and where job growth is at  this time.  Manufacturing is coming back to the US - Brownsville is doing nothing to attrack this new business.  You must have a work force trained in robotics if you want this job.  TSC is adamant - it will not provide the training - so be it - then maybe since TSC is unwilling to do its job the city needs to step up to plate and start the job training so that when the time comes to bring in a new manufacturer, Brownsville will have a trained work force.

I think during the Fly Frontera disaster Brownsville proved its current city  commission is incapable of showing poise, intelligence of integrity.  We need new businesses - but if Brownsville is going to have to give away $1.5 million in guarantees on a gamble for a new airline, then it is fair to say Brownsville's leadership is so desperate that they are unwilling to look at the facts.

The Fly Frontera deal was a con from square one.  Jim Gallagher was so desperate to steal this money from the people of Brownsville, on his Fly Frontera web page, he point blank lied about a 6-1 vote by the Brownsville City Commission.  Rather than  denounce this con on the people of Brownsville Pat Almighty and Eddie ala Haskell Camarillo attacked Tony Martinez for mistakenly relying on the lie.  People of honor attack the liar - not the victim of the lie.

People I can guarantee you, if Camarillo is elected mayor he will put Fly Frontera on the agenda.

Quintanilla is still pushing Fly Frontera with his lies because he knows he has the votes of Atkinson, Ahumada, and Camarillo.  Montoya's decision to all of a sudden find god and attack Longoria may prove fatal to the four votes needed for Fly Frontera.  Its funny - everything Montoya said about Longoria was well known while Longoria was a supporter of Fly Frontera  - but yet nothing - why?  he was protecting Longoria because Longoria was willing to give away $1.5 million of your tax dollars.  Longoria pulls  his support on the con, and all of a sudden Montoya finds god.

But compare this to Camarillo - Longoria and Camarillo both voted to raise PUB rates and late fees for the poorest of the poor - why did Montoya not mention this?  simple - he does not want to hurt Camarillo with the truth about his voting record.

There are sleeper candidates out there who have agreed to vote for Fly Frontera- I have no idea who they are - I asked Villarreal about his position on Fly Frontera and he refused to answer my question.  If you have not voted, before you vote for someone make  them put in writing they will not vote for Fly Frontera after the election.

I hope all DO respond to your questions. What is concerning is WHY they have not. I don't think that someone should "refuse" to answer questions, especially when it concerns the citizens of Brownsville and their HARD EARNED TAX dollars!
Running for office must be extremely hard, but all of them chose to do so to make a difference in our city. That alone is respectable in itself & we appreciate their valiant efforts. However, it is time now to BE A LEADER!
They all need to get off the fence, quit lurking in the shadows & stand up for what they believe in-they would be surprised that people will not only like them more, even more importantly, RESPECT them more. Agree to disagree but do so in a respectful manner, not resort to petty sarcastic remarks which is childish & just plain disgusting. That will get the votes they're looking for.

I agree - if a reader can provide me everyone's email I will send the questions - but I will tell you - they will not answer them - they fear being specific

and for the millionthe time

slander is spoke libel is written "S" for slander "L" for letters

i would answer no to most of these questiosns!
opposed to the CCRMA's plan to build the West Pkwy/Toll Road?
Not necessarily. this may be the lynchpin in our downtown revitilization. This could provide the perception of a clean, safe way to access downtown, without having to drive down a dreary 12th street, or a dirty international blvd. People from other places are intimidated by streets like that, and they will turn around before they even get to downtown.
To use all the city's legal and persuasive powers to STOP the road.
Persuasive is one thing, but legal is something else. If our lawyers fighht their lawyers, the taxpayers of Brownsville will foot the bill for both sides. The only happy people will be the rich lawyers.
Are u prepared to work for the eight-mile railroad bed to become a bike, hike, nature trail?
I would study the effects on our City's resources by the other walking trail first. This area is at least twice as fertile, meaning more mowing and more tree trimming, which becomes more labor costs on us taxpayers for something that only benefits a few. There would also probably be a need for increased police patrols in the area since it is not known to be the safest places to take your kids bike riding.
Work for the construction of a 7-acre park just to the east of Russell School?
It depends on land cost? If you are asking about the large corner behind CVS, I can tell you that its possible that it is priced by the square foot because it is on a prime corner. I would not support the purchase of prime retail property for park purposes. Not only will it cost us a pretty penny up front, but we will be removing a valuable piece of property from the tax rolls. Now, if it's donated, then we could talk.

Would you begin to extricate the city from the $2M of special tax funds that go annually to the Sports Park?
Bottom line is that we gotta pay off our debt. If not, our bond rating will suffer. I would support not increaasing the amount of money going in there that would cause our debt to climb...sure.
Will you stop the city's participation and funding in the "shadow government" known as Imagine Brownsville?
Possibly.. I would definitely investigate it.
Will you order the police to strictly enforce speeding, stop sign and vehicle registration and inspection laws?
With the exception of speeding, yes to all the others. On any of Brownsville's streets, the speed limits were arbitraily set too low. State law requires that a speed study is performed. I would determine the true speed limet thru study, and then i would enforce that. Do you think that when the City lowered the speed on Price from 40 to 35, that they performed a study..NO, they just caved to a complaining citizen that had some pull down at city hall. I would definitely place emphasis on running red lights near the mall.
Will you continue the plastic bag ban? Yes, but in a modified form. I think it is burdonsome to require that paper sacks have handles. I would also allow mall stores to have bags,. The problem bags were HEB, Stipes, and WalMart...at least in my yard. I would also require that stores ask the customer if they want a bag, instead of just giving it to them.
Will you work for curbside recycling? Only if it was not to be subsidized by the City. Curbside is very expensive, and the City should continue with drop stations, or encourage citizens to pay an increased convenience fee.
Will you direct the PUB to seek alternative (green) energy sources?
Not if it was going to require that our citizens pay a much higher bill each month. And, not if it's going to require PUB to take on additional debt.
Sanctuary City? NO!, not this close to the border. I would encourage our local reps to make it easier to allow foreigners to live and work here. My position is that I will take a hard working foreigner over an American bum any day.
Two airlines seeking city assistance. I would not give any startup company any money!!!! I would offer incentives, however to established airlines to begin low cost international flights, however.
Encourage City cooperation with the many governmental and educatonal entities? Yes, definitely!

Are you aware of Legislation SB 1922 and HB 3860 introduced by Sen. Lucio and Rep. Oliveira on Friday 29 April. They are trying to BACKDOOR and currently succeeding in the creation of a Property Improvement District to benefit the undeveloped West Side of Modern Venice subdivision (The Fingers) in Port Isabel, TX. Those in the developed East Side of Modern Venice are to be included in the district and will eventually be assessed taxes in the newly created district. Many citizens from the Modern Venice subdivision are against it and have been voicing their concerns to the legislators only to be ignored. Raybec has hired Vinson & Elkins as lobbyist to get this legislation through in order to have public tax money make improvements on the West Side of the Fingers where they have a significant ownership and conflict of interest. Mayor Joe Vega states he is against the legislation, but abstains on all votes. Please investigate on behalf of the citizens of the Port Isabel, TX Modern Venice Subdivision. It reeks of dirty politics as usual... Link to hearing:

On the fingers area you really need to call NBC 23 for the story -that is your best source to get it out - I will check the proposed law - it will be useful come election time to remind people

On responding - no - no candidate is going to respond - they would rather lose your vote than put a position in writing which is anything other than a generalized statement.

I have asked John Villarreal to respond to my questions twice - he will not - he has decided he does not need to votes of the BV readers in his district

Bobbie,

I heard the libelous comments you said about John Villarreal to your friend today and the slander you print on your rag. John is trying to help the community, he doesn't have the time to answer all the questions given to him. He will answer yours when he gets some time. Why don't you attack Zavaletta or Patel? Maybe they're paying you? If you keep attacking John he may sue you for defamation per se. Maybe you need a taste of your own medicine.

Vote John V.
May 2nd to 10th!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BobbyWC said...

First of all everything I said is truthful - its has been some time since the first time I emailed him - if he is not going to answer emails then she should not ask that people e-mail him

further - not that reality matters to an idiot - but I have made clear I will not vote for Zavaleta and Patel. So according to your ignorant logic Villarreal must be paying me

Also given the fact I have not left the house and spoken with someone (I did leave the house for groceries) exactly who is the friend I spoke with?

Oh, they're putting out their video's of prepared statements at their rallies - This is why people do not vote - now I do know of several people who are voting just to vote everyone out - not a good reason to vote - but at least they are voting

I will vote tomorrow - I will not vote in the at large or district iv - I simply do not know anything about the candidates in the at larger or I do not like any of the candidates in district 4
