IN THEIR OWN WORDS, A NEW BROWNSVILLE ADDITION

http://www.facebook.com/pages/In-Their-Own-Words2011-Brownsville-TX-Mayor-and-Commissioner-Candidates/134627253277377

These people appear to be neutral in the campaign for city commission and mayor. This is good because it gives the candidates a chance to answer questions.

On the question of firing Sossi, Roman Perez said basically " you cannot bring an axe to grind to the commission if elected." I agree - a very professional answer. Jessica said she would have to give the question an objective review - again very professional answer. Personally I would fire him on day one.

As far as I can tell there are some questions the candidates are refusing to answer - which is sad because each question is valid.

How does each candidate feel about contributing $2M of the city's tax dollars to the proposed new airline venture?

ANONYMOUS: To all Candidates
We need qualified people to run our city! Would you be willing to fire the present City Manager and City of Brownsville department heads who do not have a Master's Degree? When hiring new managers will you require that they provide a Master's Degree or be a registered professional engineer? How will you ens...ure that city staff is hired based on qualifications not "who you know"?
I like the web page - it is productive because it educates the public.  you really need to go to older posts at the bottom to see some of the more detailed answers given early on by the candidates.
I  found this while searching for facebook or web pages for the candidates.  I promised as I found them I would post them - so long as they do not contain lies about other people.
Roman is right - it was not the mayor who turned the cameras off on public comment it was Mark Sossi - Atkinson blaming the mayor is just another Atkinson con on the people.
People grow over time - I think we are increasingly seeing a more measured and mature Roman Perez.  This is not my district and I will not endorse anyone.  I am just pointing out my observations.
I know I said no more on the campaigns - but this is more about telling people how to get information and not reporting on the politics.
I would hope the candidates would just answer the two unanswered questions.  If I am wrong and someone has answered them, then let me know - I will say I am sorry - and post their answer.
Again this is a good project.  Please email it to your friends so that  they can see there is information out their.  I am in district 4  - I know nothing about my candidates - they have chosen to not send me information - there are no mailers - just signs - sorry guys I will not vote on signs.  tell me something - I will periodically go back to this page in hopes of learning something about each district 4 candidate.

Very good find, Bobby. From the looks of it, I don't think people are refusing or ducking any questions. The administrators are receiving questions connected to Brownsville Cheezmeh. Questions are filtered and redundant questions are ignored. The questions submitted to candidates are decided on by moderators. Not every question is every submitted. Once they are received they are then posted on BC and this other FB page.

On Villarreal and Zavaletta is someone will send me their facebook or web page or what every I will post it - when I post these I do not allow for negative comments because the goal is to get out information so I want the candidates to feel safe.

On not answering teh questions post - I basically understand what you said but on the two questions I pointed out can you direct me to where anyone has answered them - I am not sayin I am right - I am just asking for help - I cannot see where anyone has answered them.

Candidates have answered the one about the city manager in part when they answer the question about Sossi. They can't fire city heads at all so most of that question is moot. The rest are fair game but have not been asked by the moderators. If they were asked without anyone responding to those questions, then I can understand your beef with the candidates. I would have a beef at that point. As of now, I have no beef because unless the candidate regularly checks the page they would never see the question. It won't show up in their newsfeed unless the person asking likes the page and is your friend too. I know where I stand with the candidates just by watching Tuesday's city meeting on Fly Frontera I know who I'm not supporting leaving me to support their challengers. No incumbent has brought up certificates and degrees. The incumbents' non action is an answer to that question. So again I know who I'm not voting for.

The site is being reformatted to make it more easily readable. We started with a viewpoint question for all mayoral and commissioner candidates: "What is your vision for downtown Brownsville?" Then we submitted 8 followup questions about GBIC, water, police, animal control, "Imagine Brownsville", etc.

Two additional questions have since been submitted about the city attorney and the broadcast of public comments at city commission meetings.

Jim Barton and Laura Miniel are co-administrators.

Someone commented about having "qualified" people to run our city. Do all the candidates running for office have degrees? And if so, what kind of degree and from what university? Where do they work when they're not running their campaigns? I'd like to know also are ALL Democrats or are there any Republicans? No one seems to know.

Tony Zavaleta, who is running for Commissioner District 4, has a PhD in Anthropology from The University of Texas at Austin. Democrat, as far as I know.
