DECENT HUMAN BEINGS CAN PUT POLITICS ASIDE TO DO THE RIGHT THING

Given we live in a world where ignorance is a celebration of humanity it does not surprise me how some would try and make political hay over a wonderful and great idea. The BV supports 100% the idea of renaming International or Coffeeport after ICE Agent Jaime Zapata.

It is unfortunate that some people's hate and ignorance forces them to focus in on the fact that the idea and force behind this great gesture is Commissioner Atkinson and Senator Lucio. It takes a petty person to trash the idea because they dislike those who are pushing the idea.

I do not have to like Commissioner Atkinson or Senator Lucio to know the renaming of International after Agent Zapata is a good thing.

This is another example of leadership and people putting aside their differences to make the right decision. For the BV the renaming of International cannot come soon enough.

I want my readers to look closely at this example and how Chris Davis and the BV came together to make the live internet coverage of the BISD meeting a reality.

We desperately need to stop this insanity that informs us, if we dislike one another's politics we cannot work to accomplish great things. This is false - people can do the right thing while agreeing to disagree over other matters.

This is what is going to allow Brownsville to move forward.

I think it is pretty much a hollow gesture. I think it would be better to do something that matters in his honor, instead. But if they are set on changing a street name, I wish they would pick different streets. International Blvd., not many cities that identify one of their streets as an "international" thrufare. We should keep that. And Coffeeport Road. That relates back to Brownsville history when that was the route to a bustling port that was a doorway into the country for many tropical products. Just saying -- don't erase our history.

Yeah, wasn't coffee port FM802 back in the day. It was rename back when a FM802 was rerouted. Back in the day the coffee trucks would use the old FM802 to go back and forth from the port with coffee. Yeah, History!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking the city, if it wants to make a gesture, could determine how much it will cost to change a street name and use that money to set up a Jaime Zapata scholarship or grant for law enforcement majors. It will benefit the community on an ongoing basis and will not incurr expenses for the residents and business' that will ensue with a street name change.

There are many heros that have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country from our enemies and no one has bothered to name anything after them. Our fallen soldiers have never had the Secretary of Defense nor any high ranking official attend their funerals. Please be fair and start petitioning the naming of streets for ALL of our heros.

When Kiki Camarena was taken hostage in Guadalajara, tortured and murdered, in his honor, the Red Ribbon celebration took hold thruoghout the nation. Brownsville celebrates Red Ribbon week in honor of Camera, a native of Calexico, CA. Can we think of something that can generate the same type of response on behalf of Zapata? I have some ideas I would like to post and invite others to think through a wide lens as to honoring Zapata's memory. Thanks for allowing input on this matter.

I agree with Mescalero's 6:26 PM post. In the future I hope that streets and buildings, aren't named after politicians that have not made a positive contribution.

How about naming a school to honor his memory or the new wing at Hanna.

PLEASE stop naming schools after dirty politicians who have contributed nothing to our children.

Honor the true heroes like our fallen soldiers, policemen etc.

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS US ALL.
