THERE IS NO DIVORCE - GARZA AND TORRES JUST LOOKING FOR A BETTER DEAL

“Garza called for cautious evaluation of any future agreements, while Mendez cited figures supporting the possibility for TSC to go it alone.”

“Torres was the most outspoken regarding the junior college and UTB parting ways, saying March 15 was not a deadline because it is possible emergency legislation could be brought up for the schools.”

"Garza said there was no need to separate, but it was important to “get the best deal for our community” and that she did not believe taxes would double if TSC and UTB separated, as has been rumored.”

http://www.brownsvilleherald.com/news/trustees-122947-college-night.html

Since the election the BV has repeatedly stated there are not 4 votes for a free standing community college. This is not over - Garza and Torres sent a clear message - give us a better deal and we will screw the community college.

Until Brownsville can find a way to humiliate UT in the national press with claims of racial discrimination UT will hold the upper hand. This is the only hope Brownsville has for its community college, unless UT simply says - enough - we are done. It seems to me Garza and Torres are clearly opposed to the divorce and are gambling that holding out will get them the deal they want for TSC.

What is funny to me is, we the taxpayers paid for this institution, but do not seem to have a say in its future. UT can just come in and take our property based on the votes of 4 elected officials. This is sad, and has to be unconstitutional - but to be clear - the Texas Supreme Court is so anti-people and taxpayers they would consider such an argument absurd.

The activists better find a way quick to change the minds of Garza and Torres or else TSC is dead if UT puts enough money on the table. With that death goes the dreams of our children.

Okay, I am looking for a day of rest- unless there is a movie review or breaking news BV will be back on Monday

Why are you trusting the Herald reporting on the what really happened? Torres was telling his opponent that the deadline was foolish and not to use it as an excuse to force anyone to decide and decide now. It is part of their smokescreen that he is trying to punch through to get to the truth. In reference to the deal, it's about the transition to two separate entities. They are still going to have to deal and negotiate things. If they didn't need to do that, they wouldn't need to appoint transition team members.

This is nothing new for adela garza, whenever she's serving on a board, run for your life...

Amateurish, in over her head, taking cues from her cell phone via texts...everyone at the meeting saw it...pathetic.

The TSC board is supposed to vote in the best interest of the community(students/taxpayers), how is reducing the tax rate and offering a chance for these students to continue pursing degrees after 1/2 year degrees?

If it was the city trying to strong arm TSC, I can see them standing firm. If it was a big real estate tycoon, fight fight.

These 4 that voted were working under the assumption that UT would STILL fund a 4 year univ with the open admissions process that UTB currently has. Bad assumption.

UTB can very well create a JR/SR level institution where the only students that can attend if they have 3.0 and 60 hrs. Just like many many Univ currently have for transfer students. How many of our local students will be accepted? 3.0? Not many.

The TSC board dropped the ball. Unification and reducing taxes, allowing an open admissions to UTB for our students WAS in the best interests of our community/students.

What a lack of foresight...then again Adela is on the board.

And UTB could survive under this scenario? Bad assumption......

My question didn't make sense, I left our a piece..

Special Boarding Meeting on Monday to Put Springston on Admin Leave??? Is this TRUE?? We all need to protest!

Cata, what in the world do you think you are doing and who do you think you are to make comments like that where you do not see Springston taking us where YOU want BISD to go. Quien eres tu? De adonde crees que sabes tanto? En primer lugar, de adonde vienes tu. Why did you call for the meeting at 1 PM? So that we can not attend and protest? Why are you doing it behind closed doors and then you come out and just vote and you don't tell us anything. You even forget to call for a motion to adjourn the meeting and you are already ponding el palote on the desk. Eres Mexican que le dieron la rienda y ahora le vale!
