WHY DOES JULIET GARCIA CHOOSE THE PATH OF FAILURE? BECAUSE WHEN DECISIONS ARE MADE THE STUDENTS ARE NOT EVEN A CONSIDERATION

This morning I woke up not knowing what to talk about. Then I saw something on CNN at about 7:45 a.m. while running to a morning appointment. Well, I decided that, that would be too much - "Coerced Patriotism is anything but Patriotism." Maybe Monday. Then I got to thinking about education - well for now I’ve bored you enough with that - but I will still talk about education today - sort of. Maybe next week I will talk about being innovative.

UTB never ceases to amaze me. We know that at the Freshman and Sophomore level courses students are failing at record levels. Two courses which have a very high fail/dropout rate are - math and anatomy. It has been shown that during the long semesters of 16 weeks the students are having a tough time of it. If students cannot successfully complete these courses in 16 weeks, how in gods name are they going to complete the same course in 5 weeks? No matter, just fail them is Juliet Garcia’s motto.

At real universities where working for the students is the goal, math and science courses are taught during the summer for 11 weeks. At real universities where real and competent people are in charge, they realized that 5 weeks is not enough time to teach most math and science courses.

On Monday students will begin to register for math and science classes for Summer I and Summer II. Most will fail. 5 weeks is just not enough time to learn the material. Why does Juliet Garcia choose the path of failure? Because when decisions are made the students are not even a consideration.

It is time an Assistant Dean of Academics is hired to address these issues. The students need an intermediary who understand their needs.

Have a nice weekend - and go tan that butt - see you at the beach
